Mike Rinder would have been a great Third Reich spokesperson

If there’s one person out there in the public relations field who really creeps me out it’s this guy, Mike Rinder, who leads the “Church” of Scientology’s Office of Special Affairs, the department that handles much of the cult’s public image and persona.

Rinder most recently appeared publicly on CNN’s Anderson Cooper 360 doing among other things, denying that BBC reporter John Sweeney had been followed by cult members while working on a segment for Panorama called “Scientology and Me.”

Despite the cult’s sickening and outright attempt to intimidate the reporter, Sweeney ended up the most memorable person in the story for his unethical shouting match with the totalitarian cult spokesman Tommy Davis. Although Sweeney’s reporting may not have been the best–he shouted to John Travolta during the London premiere of Wild Hogs–the job he did to illustrate the cult’s fanatical behavior was decent.

During the taping of the program Sweeney is clearly followed by several cars as well as confronted while conducting a private interview by Davis.

Scientology’s fear of sunlight should be clear to most people, nevertheless there’s Rinder last month flat out denying that Sweeney was followed as he denied during an A&E documentary in 1998 although footage of German journalist Mona Boutros clearly shows as many as three cars following her as well.

It’s with a strange and sinister aplomb, reminiscent of Josef Goebbels, that the Australian-born Rinder can flat out lie. It’s as if he wants you to know he’s lying that he simply doesn’t care because in the end it doesn’t matter, his cult will do what it has to do, spin any lie, cover up any controversy, attack any critic and fabricate any story that it must to get ahead.

Although I’ve hardly been the victim of Scientology, certainly I’ve been reached by Scientologists in the last week in harmless and innocuous ways. My Myspace profile has been visited by supporters Narcanon, the drug rehabilitation program founded by the habitual liar and drug user L. Ron Hubbard who Rinder goes through such lengths to defend. Just this morning I found an invite to a profile called “Stop Psychiatric Abuses”. Certainly, my profile being attached to my blog which contains a few shots at the cult, explains this. I’m hardly a candidate for the “church’s” “fair game” policy, although I have been receiving dozens of spam messages into my personal account since I posted my little Xenu contest.

Back to Rinder though, this guy is creepy. I’d like to find out more about him. He seems like a true-believer who speaks through his neck.

  1. You know that I am just as engrossed in this train wreck as you are. To see anybody outright lie and have no feeling is just…. psychotic. Thanks for the additional video, Ray!

  2. If you want a real look into Rinder’s world read the letters from Robert V. Young. Also checkout xenutv.com for all sorts of details and TV specials (some feature Rinder)
    Letters and other Rinder info:
    My take:
    1) His baby daughter died in the early 80’s and DM (David Miscariage as I call him) tells him to get over it (in some other deposition off the above link). Can you imagine the effect.
    2) In Robert V. Youngs open letters (link above) you get the sense that perhaps there is a person behind Rinder.
    3) He was/is (more below) a true believer
    4) I think Tommy Davis is his sucessor. Word is he’s had a few beatings (if you can call them that when 3 guys hold you down) from DM in the 90’s. My opinion is if you watch him in the Panorama film he looks desperate for Tommy to take over. I still think he’s sucked in, but part of me thinks he’s begging to get out.
    5) Conclusion, of all the high ups in the organization of Scientology he really reminds me of Darth Vader. That is I think deep inside him there is a person who sees the evil that CoS has permeated. Let me be more blunt, he sees the insanity he witnessed on Apollo with LRH has not left under DM it’s only gotten worst. The letters from Robert V Young further this notion in my mind at least.
    6) Watch some of his interviews. In the Dateline and Dateline specials he actually smerks and looks away (on xenutv.com I think it’s in on of the later parts). So much for eye contact.
My conclusion, he’s scared shitless for himself/family etc. A phyciatrist might say he exhibits a Patty Hurst mentality. I believe he was an honest believer, but is now were peeps like Robert V Young got to. They perhaps see the logic in the teachings of Scientology (Repacakged Buddism space-opera money making phyciatrylike cult/scheme) and cling to their initial experience and somehow block out Mofia like mentality of CoS management. That’s exactly how peeps like Travolta/Cruise fall for it as they don’t see the management side, the scam side, the fraud side. Just google Travlolta’s wikipedia and you’ll see he got into trouble with CoS in the late 70’s for crticizing management… I’m rambling, but what makes this whole CoS thing so intreguing is that if they (followers) opened their eyes they’d see the insanity of the “management” and declare them SP.

A few more google bits, look into ex Sci members page on wikipedia. Check out the story behind the SF 49’ers football player… Also checkout the blog on xenutv, and xenu.net (operation clam bake).

Good luck fellow Rebel, err SP  The force is strong with you.

  3. Mike Rinder is no longer in the employ of the Scientology movement as their PR frontperson. He left, due to unusual punitive pressure he received each time he “failed” in doing his PR frontperson duties. David Miscavige, leader of Scientology, I’ve heard from 3 ex high ranking staffers, acted out the irrate parent and slapped and rebuffed Mike Rinder severely, and irrationally, each time Mike failed in his duties, and now Mike has joined the long tradition of ex Scientology PR frontpeople who quit or were demoted off their positions. Scientology/Hubbard’s operation is indefensible and David Miscavige is a dictator like leader whose vituperative outbursts and petty slapping violence against those he is unsatisfied with, is the cause for so many “failed” leaders and PR frontpeople over the years.
Mike Rinder was seen by Miscavige as having failed in Mike’s attempts to deal with the negative publicity of the BBC show earlier in 2007. Mike left the employ of Scientology abruptly without authorization, in June or July 2007, not wishing to put up with Miscavige’s petty irrational outbursts any longer. Being the PR frontperson for Scientology is a losing proposition. The Hubbard administrative setup for Scientology is a no-win situation, except for the dictatorial top dog, and that’s David Miscavige. Everyone under Miscavige is being treated disgracefully per the reports of those defecting out of the top ranks of the Scientology movement. That’s the real scene!
